Introduction
Choosing a melting furnace isn’t just about capacity. It’s about matching the right equipment to your production rhythm, your energy budget, and your quality standards. Over the years, I’ve helped hundreds of die-casters and recycled aluminum producers select the right QDW tilting furnace. This guide shares the same advice I give my clients during a factory visit—practical, honest, and focused on what actually matters.
If you’re planning a new melting workshop or upgrading an existing line, this guide will help you ask the right questions before you invest.
Step 1: Start with Your Hourly Melting Demand
The first question I always ask is: “How many kilograms of aluminum do you need to melt per hour during peak production?”
The QDW Series covers a wide range:
| Model | Melting Capacity |
|---|---|
| QDW500 | 500 kg/h |
| QDW800 | 800 kg/h |
| QDW1000 | 1,000 kg/h |
| QDW1500 | 1,500 kg/h |
| QDW2000 | 2,000 kg/h |
| QDW3000 | 3,000 kg/h |
My advice: Don’t size your furnace based on average demand. Size it for your peak. A furnace that’s always running at 100% capacity will wear out faster and leave no room for growth. I usually recommend choosing a model that gives you 10-20% headroom above your highest hourly requirement.
Real example: A die-caster in Suzhou was melting 700 kg/h at peak. They chose the QDW800. Two years later, they added a second die-casting machine—and the furnace was still able to keep up.
Step 2: Match the Furnace to Your Application
The QDW Series is used in two main industries, and the selection criteria are slightly different for each.
For Die-Casting Plants
If you’re feeding aluminum into die-casting machines, the key requirements are:
-
Precise temperature control to reduce porosity and scrap.
-
Smooth, controlled pouring into the shot sleeve.
-
Consistent delivery that matches your machine cycle time.
The QDW tilting design allows the operator to pour directly into the shot sleeve with minimal temperature loss. For most die-casting applications, the QDW500 to QDW1500 range is ideal.
For Recycled Aluminum Plants
If you’re melting scrap aluminum, the challenges are different:
-
Impurities and residual materials require more frequent cleaning.
-
Higher volume is often needed to justify the operation.
-
Burn loss becomes a major cost factor.
The QDW tilting design makes cleaning much easier—residual aluminum pours out almost completely, reducing contamination between batches. For recycled aluminum, I usually recommend the QDW1000 to QDW3000 range.
Step 3: Don’t Compromise on Temperature Accuracy
Temperature control is where many furnaces fall short. The QDW Series delivers ±5℃ accuracy and a holding temperature range of 700-750℃.
Why does this matter?
-
±5℃ means fewer defects, better surface finish, and more consistent mechanical properties.
-
Stable holding temperature gives you full control over the melting process, especially during holding and pouring.
If you’re producing high-precision parts for automotive or electronics, this level of accuracy is not optional—it’s essential.
Step 4: Calculate the True Cost of Energy and Burn Loss
Energy and material waste are the two biggest hidden costs in aluminum melting.
The QDW Series is designed to address both:
| Parameter | QDW Specification |
|---|---|
| Melting Energy Consumption | 55-60 Nm³/t |
| Aluminum Burn Loss | <0.8%-1.3% |
How we achieve this:
Tower preheating system recovers waste heat to preheat both the aluminum material and combustion air. This alone saves 15%-20% energy compared to traditional furnaces.
Variable-frequency fan adjusts automatically based on furnace pressure, reducing electricity consumption and noise.
Low burn loss directly reduces material waste—you’re saving money on every single melt.
Real example: A client in Suzhou replaced three traditional furnaces with a single QDW central melting system. Their energy consumption dropped from 145 m³/ton to 116 m³/ton. That’s over 1.2 million RMB saved annually in gas costs alone.
Step 5: Plan for Your Workshop Layout
Before you choose a model, think about your space:
- Floor space: Leave room for charging equipment, maintenance access, and material flow.
- Height clearance: The tower preheating system requires vertical space.
- Future expansion: If you plan to add machines later, choose a furnace that can grow with you.
Optional features to consider:
- Custom charging devices
- Weighing systems
- Degassing bricks (for improved aluminum quality)
- Automatic fume hoods (for better workshop ventilation)
I always recommend discussing your layout with us before finalizing the model. A small change in placement can make a big difference in efficiency.
Step 6: Think About Maintenance and Uptime
A furnace is a long-term investment. The last thing you want is unexpected downtime.
The QDW Series is built for reliability:
-
First-tier refractory materials for extended service life.
-
High-quality combustion system for stable performance.
-
Variable-frequency fan for reduced wear and noise.
-
Tilting mechanism for safe, smooth operation.
-
Easy cleaning thanks to the tilting design—residual aluminum pours out almost completely.
One of my clients in Ningbo told me: “Since this furnace went online, we’ve had no major issues for over half a year. Less downtime means lower equipment cost per part.”
Step 7: Use This Checklist Before You Buy
□ What is your peak hourly melting demand (kg/h)?
□ What is your application—die-casting or recycled aluminum?
□ What temperature accuracy do you need?
□ What is your available floor space and height?
□ What are your energy cost targets?
□ Do you need optional features (degassing, weighing, fume hood)?
□ What is your budget range?
□ What is your expected delivery timeline?
If you can answer these questions, we can find the right QDW model for you.
